Vibration Platform Buying Guide
Vibration tables are not all the same. Despite what you might think, there are different types of vibration that affect the body in different ways.
These machines have a wide range of styles, power ratings, and features.
Keep the following considerations in mind when looking for a vibration platform trainer.
Type of Vibration Machine
The most basic feature is the kind of vibration the machine produces. There are two main kinds of vibrations: oscillating and tri-planar.
Oscillating platforms are probably the more common of the two since tri-planar platforms tend to be more expensive and larger.
Oscillating platforms
Oscillating platforms (also called Pivotal platforms) have a platform with a point in the center that acts as a fulcrum. The seesaw design dips one side while rising the other.
They are designed to mimic the natural motion of walking with the small oscillations in height and are good for cardio workouts, burning fat, and increasing your endurance.
Oscillating platforms are also typically lower impact on the body so they can be used more frequently without the worry of joint pain.
Tri-planar platforms
Tri-planar platforms (also called linear platforms) instead use a linear vibration (up-and-down) to stimulate the muscles and core. These platforms vibrate up and down very quickly, which imitates the force on the body when jumping.
This makes them good for supporting you in building muscle mass and strengthening bone density, but they can cause pain if you have joint problems.
Tri-planar vibration platforms are sometimes a favorite of pro-athletes like football and basketball players who need their legs and core to handle large impact forces.
Keep in mind that most tri-planar platforms do not move exactly up-and-down in the z-axis, but may combine motion in all three dimensions. The key thing is that the vibration is achieved by moving the entire platform rather than tilting it.
Other Types
There are other types of vibration platforms, such as biplanar or cross-lateral platforms, most of which are variations/combinations of oscillating and linear vibration.
In general, oscillating (see-saw motion) vibration platforms are a good choice for more casual workouts while tri-planar platforms are for higher-intensity workouts.
Vibration Intensity
The intensity of a vibration platform is determined by two things: the frequency and the amplitude of the vibration.
A standard run-of-the-mill vibration trainer can operate anywhere in the range of 20-40 Hz. This measurement means that the plate completes one cycle of motion 20-40 times per second.
For oscillating plates, one cycle of motion corresponds to a single teeter-totter of the seesaw motion.
For triplanar plates, one cycle means the platform rises and lowers itself back to the original starting position.
The amplitude refers to how large the vibrational movement is.
Most oscillating vibration platforms for non-sports professionals have very low amplitudes of a few millimeters. The higher the amplitude, the more force the body has to withstand per vibration.
In general, you cannot change the amplitude of an oscillating platform as the physical hardware puts limitations on how high the platform edges can rise.
Some tri-planar machines allow the user to set amplitude. In general, you cannot modulate the amplitude when the device is in operation. This is because the gearbox must completely stop before it can switch to a different setting for a high centrifugal spin.
The energy transferred by vibration is directly proportional to the amplitude, so a higher amplitude vibration means your body has to withstand more force.
There are some vibration platforms that can change both the frequency and amplitude while in operation. Sonic machines can dynamically adjust frequency and amplitude levels on the fly.
“G-force” rating
If you look at vibration platforms you might see a measure “G-force.” The amount of g-force represents how much force compared to gravity the machine produces on your body.
The idea is that the more g-forces, the more force in the movement and the more intense the workout.
Honestly, though, g-force ratings can be misleading. That is because the exact g-forces you feel on your body are very dependent on your weight (mass), position, and momentum.
Calculating g-forces is not as simple as product descriptions make it appear. So we recommend not worrying about this statistic too much; the important things to focus on are the frequency and vibration ratings.
Also, there is a growing body of evidence that higher g-forces are actually bad for you. So try to avoid products that market themselves heavily on their g-force rating.
Platform grip
People stand on vibration platforms so they need to have a durable and tactile grip. Vibration machines usually have thick rubber treads on the top of the platform that provides stability and a little bit of shock resistance.
The exact layout of the platform grip depends on the specific machine. Some machines cluster tread patterns near the toes or near the heels.
Likewise, the size of the top platform is important. The larger the platform, the more space you have for activities and workouts but you will need more space for storage and transportation.
Whole Body vs Non-Whole Body
Whole-body vibration machines are designed to produce vibrations in the whole body. Most vibration platforms out there are whole-body vibration machines. You can use a whole-body machine to vibrate a single part of your body, like just your leg, for example.
Display Panels
If you look at most modern exercise equipment like treadmills or ellipticals, they have panels that display the current time, incline, speed, etc.
Vibration machines also have display panels that report relevant exercise info.
Most of the time, there will be a few buttons on the panel that let you change vibration frequency.
They may also include displays that tell you how many calories you have burned
Cost
Vibration platforms can vary greatly in cost. Basic models start between $100-$300, but high-end therapeutic full-body vibration platforms can cost thousands of dollars.
A solid mid-range vibration table will cost around $300. We would not recommend going any lower than $100. Any lower than that and you are in the realm of cheap ineffective vibration tables.
Noise
Smaller portable vibration machines are generally quiet. They are about as loud as a normal conversation between two people at home.
Larger machines can produce more noise. There are some machines made specifically to minimize the sound produced.
Sound tolerance is a subjective criterion, so you should get whatever you can comfortably manage.
Ease of Use
Vibration tables can be sophisticated pieces of machinery. That is why you should get something easy to use and set up. This includes cleaning too.
The larger the machine, the more difficult it will be to clean. You should try to wipe down your vibration machine after each use.
Material/Durability
The best vibration plates are made from a durable ABS plastic. Despite what you might think, ABS plastic is very durable and light. For a full-body machine, you should look for one with a metal frame. Metal is the most durable frame material.
User Reviews
User reviews are a good way to get a more honest look at a product. Reviews can tell you things that reading a product description cannot, and most people tend to trust user reviews.
User reviews also give you an idea of how things like customer service and warranty policies work.
Brand Reputation & Warranty
Lastly, make sure you buy from a reputable vendor. Name brands usually carry a higher price tag, but they come with a quality guarantee. Speaking of guarantees, make sure the product has a good warranty too.
Ideally, you’ll never have to use the warranty policy, but it’s good to have a fallback plan in case something goes wrong.
Vibration Platform FAQ
What is whole-body vibration?
Whole-body vibration, as the name implies, is applying high-frequency vibrations to the entire body. Various parts of the body have a natural harmonic frequency, and whole-body vibration is a method to activate this harmonic response in tissues and bodily structures.
What is a vibration machine and how does it work?
Vibration machines are devices designed to stimulate bodily vibration. They are made from components that vibrate quickly and transfer that momentum to the body.
Full-body vibration machines transfer vibrations to the body from the bottom up, just like how one vibrating object can cause vibrations in another object through physical contact.
What are the benefits of a vibration machine?
There is some evidence that vibration training has several benefits, from muscle strengthening to bone density benefits. It may also improve balance and strength in older adults.
Is it safe to use a vibrating exercise machine?
Vibrating machines are safe as long as you don’t operate one at dangerously high frequencies or amplitudes. Vibrational exposure for long periods can damage bodily structures, though most commercially available vibration platforms cannot achieve dangerous levels. Vibration tables can be bad for you if you have musculoskeletal problems or suffer from joining problems. Those who are pregnant should not use vibration tables.
We recommend speaking to your doctor before using a vibration machine.
How long and how often should I use a vibration machine?
The general rule of thumb is that you should try to use your vibration machines just 15-minutes a day about 3 times a week. You do not need to spend an extended time on a vibration table to get the benefits. You should probably not use your vibration machines every day unless you have express orders from a doctor or physical therapist.
How effective are vibration machines?
There is some evidence showing that light to moderate vibration training can help improve muscle strength. There is also some research showing that vibration can be used to help back pain, and support bone mineral density.
Vibration can be dangerous in some circumstances so it’s important to talk to your doctor before trying if you have any pre-existing conditions.
It is also important to realize that vibration machines should not replace regular exercise and a healthy diet. There is some evidence that vibration tables have benefits, but they can be bad for you if you are not working on developing your strength in other manners.
Vibration tables should be a supplement to your workout routine, not a replacement.
What are some tips regarding vibration machines?
- Figure out your goals. Don’t just buy a vibration table for fun, make sure you’re doing it for a specific reason.
- Frequency is generally more important than amplitude.
- Make sure to work on your flexibility separately
- Don’t overdo it
- Switch it up with dynamic exercises
- Make sure to flex your knees while using the platform
